Where spreadsheets work
A spreadsheet is excellent for one-off analysis, scenario planning, importing clean data and producing a focused management view. It is familiar, flexible and easy to distribute.
Where operational risk appears
Multiple versions, manual re-entry, unlocked formulas, unclear ownership, delayed reconciliation and inconsistent master data grow as locations and users increase. The team spends more time proving the number than acting on it.
What software must add
A replacement should add controlled master data, authenticated users, role-based access, validated transactions, linked workflows and repeatable reports. Moving the same spreadsheet into a web form is not enough.
Use Excel with the system
A good operating platform does not ban spreadsheets. It makes exports deliberate and traceable, while the authoritative transaction and access controls remain inside the system.
A simple readiness test
List the reports that require manual merging, the spreadsheets only one person understands, the adjustments that cannot be traced and the decisions delayed by data collection. Those are implementation priorities.
